Rising Stars: Meet Jabari Osaze

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jabari Osaze.

Jabari, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started on the photography journey after I decided I did not want to pursue my career choice as a Mechanical Engineer my junior year at Tennessee State University. When I started photography, I started with Greek events because I am a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

I was doing a lot of work for my chapter, then I was introduced to promotional videos for companies, party promoters, local businesses, and such. Then, I end up doing an internship with the concrete magazine, which kind of got me more involved in the music scene of Nashville. And that’s kind of what did it for me.

Once I started shooting concerts and get more involved in the music scene, that’s when I started getting into music videos, interviews, live takes, and cover arts, etc. Really really, really heavy. Now, I have my own interview platform, where I interview local Rapers, R&B Artists, Creatives, and Entrepreneurs while I still make cover arts, shoot music videos, and shoot concerts.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The role could’ve been smoother, I feel I made it more difficult than it needed to be at times. By that, I mean; I would be stressing over things that I feel anybody just getting into any new field/career is supposed to go through and I was making it seem like it was the end of the world.

I used to stress about not having the best equipment, not having the best lighting, not having the best camera lenses not having a stabilizer like when I first started, I started to do more research on how to pull off a cinematic look with less if that makes sense like I started looking up professionals before me like YC Imaging, Peter McKinnon, Yo Ali, and people that we’re doing this way before me for a longer time to figure out how I can kind of keep up without having the same resource or equipment everyone else had.

I was also in school at the time getting my degree in film and television so I was learning all of this at the same time. Now, my biggest struggle is just marketing my work correctly for everyone to see my abilities.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am mainly a videographer but I also am great at photography. I am know for my music videos and interview platform “REEL TALK.” I am most proud of my interview platform because I see its potential. I started it in January and its opened many doors for me with artists and other creatives.

What sets me apart from others is my work ethic and ability to collaborate, I feel a lot of creatives don’t work well with each other anymore.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like Nashville’s city areas they’re photogenic. My least favorite thing is that there isn’t enough for the black culture in Nashville.
