Rising Stars: Meet Jackie Therrien

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Therrien.

Hi Jackie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am an 18-year-old indie folk/pop/alternative singer, songwriter, musician, and producer from Merrimack, New Hampshire. I started writing instrumental music at the age of 13. By the age of 14, I began incorporating lyrics into my songs. I currently write, record, and produce all of my music. I play piano, guitar, ukulele, mandolin, and clarinet.

In November of 2019, I released my first album, Love Letters, along with the lead single, Get My Attention. Get My Attention now has over 14k streams in over 65 different countries. In August of 2020, I released my second album, Dreaming, along with two singles from the album, Beautiful Boy and Stay. Stay has now become my most popular song with over 17k streams. Unlike Love Letters, Dreaming is entirely self-produced. A few weeks after Love Letters was released, I was given recording equipment for my 16th birthday. I started messing around with it, figuring things out myself. I had so much free time during quarantine that I had never had to sit down and write and record. I wrote and recorded over 20 songs in quarantine but chose 13 to be on the album.

Since Dreaming, I’ve released 3 singles- No Parties (2020), April (2021), and my most recent, I Tried Too Hard (2021), and Storm in a Teacup, released on January 14th of 2022.

I just released my first EP on March 4th of this year! Within less than 24 hours, it had already hit 11.3k streams on Spotify, making it my best release day yet!

It consists of 7 songs, all written, recorded, produced, and performed by me.
You can buy/stream all of my music on all platforms.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve struggled with recording and producing wise things, and it gets very frustrating. It takes a lot of time and patience to figure those things out independently, and they are not easy things. Another big struggle for me was that when I first started writing my songs, I was terrified to share them with anyone. My dream was to be a famous songwriter, but how could I do that if I was too scared to share anything? As you can probably tell, I did eventually get over that fear!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’d say between singing, songwriting, producing, and playing instruments, I specialize in the songwriting part. I try to write my songs like I’m writing a story, maybe not one with a beginning, middle, and end, but something that listeners can follow and visualize. I love writing about the super-specific details because those are the things that make a song feel cinematic and exciting to listen. It’s what sets it apart from other songs.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting?
Do not give up! Keep writing songs in your bedroom, playing at your school talent shows, and posting YouTube videos. Do not be afraid to show people your art! It will take time, but it will eventually get the recognition it deserves.
