Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake (Shuteye Vocalist) Marcov.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’d moved to Nashville in 2020 from Iowa, 3 months after turning 18. knowing nothing about myself or the world except that making music was the only thing I cared about. While trying to figure it all out I spent a couple years falling on my face, whether I didn’t have the maturity to be consistent or the people around me didn’t. I realized I didn’t want to do it alone (solo act) and I told myself id give it one last hooray to make something stick and try to start a band and if it didn’t work I’d just quit and move back to my small rural town. I didn’t know anything about being in a band, starting one, performing, anything but I knew it was what I wanted so I made a flyer and posted it all over social media, local venues, record stores, etc. A couple people hit me up but most fell away except for our bass player Aidan. He was older than me and far more experienced in music and the scene but he said he saw something in the songs I had been writing and took a serious chance on me. This was in April of 2023 and since then we haven’t stopped giving this band all that we got. -Jake
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A year into the band our drummer at the time had decided to part ways due to differences in creative direction, we had just dropped our first ep and now had no drummer so we scrambled and found our beloved Zach who has been with us for over 2 years now. Flash forward to year 2 as a band and we find a lead guitar player making us now a 4 piece. The sound was fuller but not only that the energy that he brought to the group really filled us out. Our energy, our spirits, and our morale was at an all time high and we were ready to take over the world. Sadly due to some personal situations he had decided to leave the group. This was a huge hit for us we scrapped our entire debut album that was in the works as the inner dynamic of the band changed drastically and it didn’t feel right to keep moving in the way we were. It forced us to really take a look at what we were doing and what we wanted and in the end became a positive change for us. We fell back in love with the music more than ever, our ethos became more authentic, our songwriting and playing improved, and our performances felt more raw and honest. We’re re-writing an entire first album hoping for it to come out at the beginning of next year.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’re an alternative band in Nashville with a strong ethos of authenticity. The word for why you listen to shuteye is probably catharsis or maybe just looking for a place you belong. We’re genre bending and willing to do what we need to do sonically in order to get our message across we’ve skated across the fields of punk, shoegaze, and post-hardcore to be specific. I’d say we’re known for strikingly honest lyrics and loud in your face riffs. What sets us apart from a viewer stand point is our authenticity/originality. Our sound doesn’t come from trying to fit a scene or replicate our favorite bands it’s an amalgamation of our diverse music interests and personal stories and with that it’s ever changing, no one project will ever sound like the last. As we grow and evolve as people, the music follows.
