Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Govan.
Hi Jamal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My photography journey began in 2015 at Tennessee State University. Growing up, I was always surrounded by cameras, which sparked my passion for photography and creativity. That passion eventually led me to pursue a degree in Graphic Design and Media Marketing, allowing me to turn something I loved into a business.
Over the years, I’ve continued to grow my brand, expand my creativity, and build meaningful connections through my work. What started as a passion on a college campus has evolved into a thriving photography business that has taken me beyond my hometown. Today, I’m proud to serve clients across multiple cities, capturing unforgettable moments and bringing creative visions to life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t always been a smooth one. Like any business owner, I’ve faced my share of challenges, obstacles, and moments of uncertainty. One of the biggest challenges over the years has been adapting to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence in the photography industry. From photo editing and creative concepts to copyright concerns, AI has changed the way we approach creativity. However, I’ve learned that instead of viewing AI as competition, it’s important to embrace it as a tool that can enhance creativity rather than replace it.
Another valuable lesson I’ve learned is that growth doesn’t always happen at the same pace. Every year won’t necessarily be your biggest or most successful year, and that’s okay. What matters most is consistency, patience, and believing in your craft. There will be times when business is slow, ideas don’t come as easily, or things don’t go according to plan. But I’ve learned that somewhere out there, someone appreciates your vision, your creativity, and the work you produce.
The key is to keep showing up, keep learning, and most importantly, keep creating. Success isn’t always about how fast you grow, but about having the dedication to keep going even when the journey gets challenging.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in portrait photography, and one of the things I love most about what I do is capturing people in their most genuine and authentic moments. My approach to photography has always been centered around keeping images as natural and timeless as possible. I believe photography should enhance your natural beauty, not completely change the way you look. Years from now, when you look back at your photos, I want you to recognize yourself and appreciate the memories exactly as they were, rather than seeing an overly edited version of yourself.
While I enjoy capturing graduation portraits, professional headshots, and other special milestones, engagement and wedding photography hold a special place in my heart. There’s something incredibly rewarding about documenting two people celebrating their love and beginning a new chapter together. From the excitement and anticipation of an engagement session to the emotions, laughter, and unforgettable moments of a wedding day, I love being able to tell a couple’s story through my lens.
What makes these experiences even more meaningful is knowing that the photographs I capture will become memories that couples and their families cherish for generations. Being trusted to document some of the most important moments in someone’s life is something I never take for granted. Each year, I look forward to meeting new people, capturing new love stories, and creating timeless images that feel just as special decades from now as they did the day they were taken.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think one thing that surprises most people is that I still work a full-time 9-to-5 job while running my photography business. As much as I love photography and take my craft seriously, I also genuinely enjoy my career in the corporate world. Both are important parts of my life, just in different ways.
Photography gives me the opportunity to step away from the structure of my everyday corporate responsibilities and tap into my creative side. It allows me to express myself, connect with people, and do something I’m truly passionate about. In a way, both careers create a balance that I really appreciate.
Will I eventually pursue photography full-time? Who knows what the future holds! I’m always open to growth and new opportunities, but right now, I’m grateful to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds. I think that’s something people often overlook. You don’t always have to choose between having a career and pursuing your passion. Sometimes, you can successfully do both, and that’s exactly what I’m enjoying about this chapter of my life.
