Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Dupree.
Jane, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Sure. Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I took guitar lessons as a teenager and played in church, so creating and performing always felt natural to me. After high school I went to MTSU, and during my first semester I joined a Christian rock band. Our label head was a rapper, and his DJ became a close friend of mine. He was actually the first person who ever showed me how to use turntables. The band only lasted a few months, but that experience opened me up to a wider world of music.
The real turning point came the summer after my freshman year when I was invited to a club called The Connection. That was my first time hearing dance music played loud and mixed. It hit me in a way I cannot fully explain. I became obsessed with electronic music from that moment on. I started buying mixtapes and records. I spent my weekends going to clubs and raves trying to absorb everything.
That fall I asked my DJ friend from the band to teach me how to use turntables, and that was my real start. Around that time I had a bowling class with a guy named Pimpdaddysupreme. We started carpooling and became friends, and he along with another friend, Matt the PM, pushed me to apply for an internship at the college radio station. When applications opened I went for it, finished my training, and got my first radio show called House Nation. I basically learned how to DJ live on air. Once that happened, doors started opening. People began booking me for events, and I even started throwing my own shows through the station.
Since then my career has continued to grow. I have held numerous club residences, played festivals across the country, and countless shows. I created a remix that landed on a project that debuted at number one on iTunes Dance and charted on the UK Music Week Commercial Dance Chart. I was the first artist signed to Forsheema Records and have several independent releases.
It has been such a wild and beautiful journey. I started with guitar in church, found myself in a college band, stepped into dance music by accident, and ended up building a life as a DJ and creative. I am still evolving, and I am genuinely excited for what is coming next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Things were not always smooth. The electronic music community was amazing, but when I started playing more clubs, I ran into some discrimination and decided to stay clear of those places after those experiences. In later years, my biggest challenge was returning to the DJ booth after going through cancer treatments. Every obstacle taught me resilience and pushed me to keep creating
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a DJ and electronic music producer,. My focus is on crafting sound that keeps people moving and fully immersed in the music. I specialize in creating sets that blend high energy tracks with hypnotic beats. I’m known for my track section and blends. That is what sets me apart from others. I love to play music that makes you connect to yourself and be one with the party.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the diversity and support within the music community. Years ago, it was basically unheard of to have multiple DJ events on the same night, and now we have enough people to support that growth. What I don’t like is that Nashville has allowed parking companies to control lots near most venues. As an artist playing downtown, having to pay upwards of $45 feels excessive, and I’m sure it’s hurting some venues as well.
