Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jayla Chapple.
Hi Jayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Well, I am the only girl out of 6 children. I specifically remember, as young as 7, that hair was important to me. I always found myself doing someone’s hair, if not my own. Around the time I started high school, I was already doing my mom’s hair and a few close friends.
I attended Austin Peay for one semester, and during my entire stay, I did my hair. Classmates, girls I’d met at certain campus events and even in my dorm building. I soon realized that university wasn’t for me then, so I left and joined the workforce while still doing my hair on the side for the extra money. Once the pandemic came around, I sat on the idea of going to beauty school.
I took that leap of faith, not knowing what to expect, and ended up getting connected with my mentor, and my entire life’s trajectory completely changed. I received my license a year later and started out working in a couple of corporate salons as a receptionist just to soak up every little thing I could.
I stepped into assisting top stylists in Murfreesboro to further my education. I started out taking clients in a commission-based salon for one year, went booth rent the next, and now I currently have a private salon suite. I’d say it was certainly a transition.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It absolutely was not a smooth road, and it still has its challenges today, but it’s all about how you manage it. It’s like you get “sets of struggles” at different stages in your career. In beauty school, the main concern was meeting all your hours and passing boards.
Once you pass and receive your license, the concern is now, “Well, where am I going to work?” “How will I get more clients?” Once you’ve established work, it’s, “Well, how do I do taxes?” Needless to say, as you move up and flourish there will always be struggles along the way, and there are always solutions as well.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a natural hair specialist, and I take great pride in leaving people who are better than I found them. I am most known for my stellar knowledge of curly hair and chill but optimistic personality.
I believe what sets me apart from every other stylist is that in my chair, it’s truly all about you. You are the star, and you are the celebrity. I take my job seriously, and I often joke and say I’m a celebrity stylist, but I really am. My clients are the stars of the show every time they step in.
Who else deserves credit for your story?
I would love to thank Susan Waggoner for putting me in the position to make my craft a true business. I think I. This industry is so glamorized, but the business side of things matters just as much as technique and revenue.
I would also like to thank Michelle Bell, Nina Williams, and Channon Brooks. These lovely ladies encouraged me and provided countless opportunities to thrive and find my footing in this industry. These women also held me accountable and guided me, and they truly wanted to see me succeed.
