Rising Stars: Meet Jenna Henderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Henderson.

Hi Jenna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
When I was a sophomore in high school, I decided I wanted to buy myself a “clicky” camera – as in one that made the click sound when I pushed the shutter button. I quickly found I had a knack for seeing light and working with people, and so I began taking client work by the time I was a senior. After graduation, I earned my degree in photography and officially opened my business in February 2005. I’ve been working full-time since then!

In 2019, after taking a small hiatus, I decided it was time to switch gears with my career slightly, and I began using my decades of experience to start coaching business owners – specifically, fellow photographers and creative women who feel a lot of pressure from running a small business and need help lifting that pressure and realigning their business on their terms.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has definitely been an ebb and flow to my business. In some seasons, it runs very smoothly and in others, I’ve hit some frustrations. Usually, the frustrations stem from when I put too much pressure on myself to build a business based on what I think I “should” do, usually because I’ve seen others do it.

However, every season of my business has taught me something new, and I love using the lessons I’ve learned to help others on their journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a photographer, I specialize in small weddings and family photos. I’m known for timeless, sophisticated images that are natural and heart-felt. Because I shoot with medium format film, my work has an exquisite feel that really resonates with my clients. I’m most proud of the many clients that I’ve worked with on multiple occasions throughout the past 15 years – for some clients, I photographed their senior portraits, then their engagement and wedding, then their first, second, and sometimes third child’s first year of photos, and now we do annual family photos. I consider it an incredible honor to be invited back into the lives of my clients over and over.

As a coach, I specialize in working with creative women who are looking to create a business built on their terms, meaning it’s centered on what matters most to them. I’m known for my straightforward and fearless approach to setting boundaries and creating balance as a working parent, which is something that gets often overlooked for creatives looking to build a sustainable small business. I’m most proud when my coaching clients talk about wins they’ve had, such as increased profits or more confidence – I love celebrating those wins!
