Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Jarvis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, music has always been such a big part of my life. It wasn’t too long before I was inspired to write my first little song, at the ripe old age of five years old. “The Fruit Snack Song” was an instant hit, mostly with my mom and the rest of my family. What can I say? I loved fruit snacks. As the years passed, however, I never thought I would choose music as my career. I wanted to be a professional chef and one day open my own restaurant. All that changed (even though I still love to cook!) when I started taking guitar lessons with an instructor that wrote his own music. He inspired me to give it a try once again, and I fell in love with the craft. Over high school, I competed in multiple fine arts competitions, even taking home first place in songwriting a couple of times for the state of Michigan. In addition, I made some trips to Nashville for training and coaching to help me grow my connections and help me grow in my craft. After a while, I saw I might be onto something.
Once I graduated from high school, I hit the road and started touring until the pandemic slowed live shows to a halt. During the pandemic, I used my spare time to write songs, learn audio engineering and start on my degree in commercial music. Earlier this year, I entered a submission to the Michigan State Fair Superstar competition, not thinking much of it. To my surprise, I was chosen as one of the several finalists that were chosen from all over the state. And after a few rounds, I took home first place. I was given a $20,000 prize package and was named the Michigan State Fair Superstar.
Ever since, I have picked up touring again while also being mentored by award-winning recording artist, Jill Jack. I even got an interview on Fox 2 News a few months ago. Currently, I’m in the studio with award-winning producer, Dale Grisa.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path has been amazingly clear, who and where I want to be. However, that’s not to say it’s been without its obstacles – quite the opposite. I’m just 21 years old, but there are times that I feel I’ve lived a lifetime. People describe me as an old soul with a young heart. I’ve walked through a lot of health conditions with my family, especially when I was in high school. My dad had a rare blood disorder that took us all across the country looking for answers.
And not too long after, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully, they are both on the mend. But for a time, it was possible that at just 18 years old, I could be left alone to take care of my little brother, and I really felt the weight of that. But all in all, I have a good life. God has been so good to me and my family. I want my songs to speak to people who are looking for a light at the end of the tunnel on this wonderful, and sometimes painful, journey we call “life”.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve had a lot of jobs over the years, but they all have a common thread: music. I started teaching guitar over 10 years ago, and I still teach some lessons here and there. I also directed a couple of high school choirs, just a year after graduating high school myself, funnily enough.
I enjoy teaching, but my real passion comes from songwriting and performing. Right now, I am juggling my music career and being a full-time college student.
I am currently working in the studio on my upcoming debut album, “Love Is A Verb”, coming Summer 2023!
All the songs on this album point to a common theme: love shown through actions. With crowd favorites, such as “Call It A Day”, “Again”, and “Walk A Mile”, among others… so make sure you stay tuned!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Despite me being part Irish, luck has nothing to do with it. I believe I’ve been blessed, both personally and professionally. I’m also not afraid to do my part. As Thomas Edison said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” I believe the same applies to any successful business or person.
