Rising Stars: Meet John Frazier

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Frazier.

Hi John, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career started in Colorado when I was an undergraduate at the University of Colorado-Boulder. After graduation, I continued on with my professional band at that time, Hit & Run Bluegrass.

We won three national band competitions: Telluride, Rockygrass, and the International Bluegrass Band Championship here in Nashville. Our national level touring schedule brought us to Nashville several times in the mid-2000s, and the city was so full of life and music.

It was an easy decision for me to want to move here in my mid 20’s and to take on the new challenge of arriving and continuing to develop my career in music city. It felt at the time as though the city was ready to explode with creativity, and it is definitely mid-explosion now!

After I arrived, I was fortunate to be able to develop several high-level apprenticeships with Jim Lauderdale, John Cowan, and Steve Martin, amongst others. These masters were generous, talented, and busy! I learned so much about writing, singing, artistry, and also about the music business here in Nashville during my time working for these guys.

I was able to compile my own ideas and experiences that led me to launch FrazierBand once I knew in my heart that I was ready to return to my own project.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Great question! Like most anything in life, it has been a mixture of smooth and challenging. I think the greatest challenge to all young artists and certainly to myself was adjusting to accept my own journey, and that it was going to be completely unique.

There is no way to explain to anyone that your life is truly a “special snowflake” There is not one that is ever going to be exactly like yours, so it is futile to compare yourself to others.

Coming to peace with that is an important part of the journey, and remember: Life is the journey, not the destination!!!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader. We specialize in newgrass and roots-rock, and alt-country sounds. I’m proudest of our now quite large body of original songs and material.

Our sound is what sets us apart from others: we blend an original landscape of American music with high-quality vocal and instrumental work and writing.
