Rising Stars: Meet Jon McCallum of 12 South and Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon McCallum

Hi Jon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been writing poetry ever since I learned how to write. I also have always loved street performances (I was a magician in high school), but I never could have dreamed of the two coming together. That was until a friend gave me his 1954 Underwood typewriter. A few weeks later, I heard a story about a man doing street poetry in New York, and I figured I could give it a shot. That was in early 2024, and I have been doing it full-time ever since.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have loved every second of it. Definitely hit some minor hiccups on the admin side of things, but my amazing wife gave a lot of her time to helping me figure out how to run a business and make this into something bigger. I still don’t really understand how taxes work or how to explain my job to people, but I am learning and growing every day.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the 12 South Street poet! I set up by the sidewalk with my vintage typewriter, and people tell me what they want a poem about and then pay however much they want for it. Each one is unique. I don’t keep copies of any of them. Sometimes, they are silly – about dogs or getting drunk; sometimes, they are about grief, misery, or lost love. I tell people I am also a part-time confessional booth, where strangers can spill their secrets, get a poem, and never see me again.

What matters most to you?
The stories. Everyone is packed with novels and movies and more beautiful, tragic stories than anyone could fully know. I have the privilege to be let into those stories. I share a moment with hundreds of people each week that gives them a piece of art, and in return, I see more of the beautiful story of humanity.

On a less spiritual level, I love sitting outside and writing poems. Still cannot believe people will pay me to do that.
