Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Randle, Lead Singer of Aconundrum.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I worked for Cracker Barrel for 6 years as a server. I was known for singing on the server line during my shifts and one day he did a vocal riff that caught another server’s ear. Justin Barnes stopped me to ask me if I had any interest in writing some original songs with him. Justin has a long history working with music and is a multi-instrumentalist. The two of us began to have writing sessions and began creating the Aconundum sound. Justin had a brother-in-law who was a talented guitar player and was interested in their jam session. Jef Keruma’s first session brought the medley to our first single and one of our most popular songs.
The first jam session birthed “Clean Up Your Mess” and we were ready to see what kind of music we could create. The three of us felt that the song had a certain energy and that it would resonate with people. So Justin asked a bass player friend of his, Jake, and we decided to give ourselves an official name so we could jam out in public. We landed on Aconundum! Jake’s participation was only temporary to help get our first EP recorded. Once the album was recorded, we did a search for a bassist. We came in contact with Reid Clagett, another talented multi-instrumentalist. The combination of four musicians with four different musical backgrounds creates the unique sound of Aconundum.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been an easy road, but we continue to press forward because we believe in our talent and we love creating and performing music. One of our biggest struggles has been keeping a drummer in the band.
Life happens and we always respect people’s decisions to take care of family and themselves first. Even without a full-time drummer in place, we’ve continued to play shows and write new material with the goal of recording before the end of 2023.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Outside of music. I work as a Webinar Events Coordinator for ActualTech Media. Through our webinars, we generate leads to assist our clients in securing new business.
Working in the tech space as a musician is very interesting in learning the language of tech. At work, I’m known for my positive attitude and infectious energy. It’s the same energy I bring when I perform.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Personally, I feel like there will be a resurgence of live full-band recordings. It feels like a lot of artists are putting more effort into their recording sound but not like the days of having everyone in the studio at the same time.
Much like Adele’s 21, we plan to record one of our next projects altogether. We know Tiktok has become a superpower in the industry, so we are looking to utilize it but in a more unique and disruptive way.
