Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Hunt.
Hi Joshua, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Joshua Hunt, owner of Hunt’s Mechanical. I lived in Nashville my whole life. When I was young, my mom and dad got divorced. Whenever I went to my dad’s house, we always went to my grandparent’s house to stay with them while my dad worked. My grandfather had started his own small business working on small engines. I never showed interest in what he was doing, but I still watched him work all the time and make time for his family. He knew how to balance the two. As I got older, I started to go down the wrong path and get into things that were not good for me. I never really knew what I was going to do in life. When I was 17, I dropped out of school. When I turned 18 in 2008, I met Richard King. He introduced me to HVAC. I worked with him for a few months and never really paid attention or took the work seriously. After a few months, I went and got dead-end jobs. In 2012 One of the last jobs I had was at a warehouse called CTDI. I worked there for 8 months with a promise of a promotion after a year. Well, at 8 months, they let me go without notice. So after being fired, I sat at home for about 6 months. Then I decided to call Richard one day even though I had not talked to him in years. I told him I would work for free to get out of the house. He let me help him that following day. I worked with him for nearly a year, paid attention, and learned a trade. Then one day, he told me I should apply for a commercial HVAC company. Weeks went by, and I met my now-wife. I’ll never forget one of the conversations we had. In 2014 I told her I would have my own HVAC business. When I first met my wife, she worked at a daycare. I went and applied at an HVAC company called Merryman Farr. The next Monday, my wife had gotten laid off from her job, and I got a call the same day from Merryman Farr that I got the job. I worked at Merryman Farr for 8 years. I have never seen myself doing this kind of work, but I’ve learned to love the field I’m in. In 2021 about August, I told my grandfather I was thinking about opening my own HVAC company. He just told me to make sure I had enough money put back. I asked him how much, and he said I don’t know. That October, he passed from Covid 19. In November, I decided to buy the books for the HVAC mechanical contractor test. I went through the whole process and got my mechanical license. I then opened Hunt’s Mechanical in June of 2022, serving all of middle Tn for any HVAC needs. I never could think I could learn a trade and start my own business. I’m here to tell any kid or adult if you want to do something. All you have to do is put your mind to it, and don’t be afraid to go for your dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road to success is easy, but it’s what you make of it. I’ve learned to enjoy the whole process to the point I go through everything with ease. I haven’t always been that way. I’ve had my fair share of obstacles, but I never let them stop me. Again I’m here to tell any kid or adult that if you keep going, you will find a way to achieve anything you set your mind to.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in heating and air, installing, repairing, and selling. We take care of residential and commercial clients in Nashville and surrounding areas. I don’t like to set myself apart from any other company. I’m humble but also good at my work, and I enjoy my work. Any customer I come in contact with usually becomes a friend.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, as I’ve stated before, my grandfather passed from Covid. We try our hardest to protect any older customers we may have by taking precautions.
