Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Abella.
Juan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born in Argentina, I came to the US in 2016 to study at Musicians Institute. What was supposed to be a 6 month trip got extended and I found myself playing in different country bands. After I decided my US experience was not over, I applied for a certificate and attended UCLA for about a year and half. During that period, I started an internship at a management and marketing company for Latin artists, where I worked for four years now. I’ve also been working on my music career under the name Vicious Rooster. Under this name, I have released an album and 3 singles. Currently I’m working on a new EP, to be released in 2025.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road is never smooth, and even when it feels smooth, it is because we are missing something. From feeling I wasn’t moving forward to feeling out of options, I know learned how to enjoy the ride, embrace uncertainty and understand both wins and losses make the experience we need to succeed. And last but not least, that our goals and desires might change as time passes by.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Argentinean singer-songwriter, I perform under the name Vicious Rooster. My music belongs to the classic rock, southern rock/americana and folk genres mainly. I also play in other bands, also under the rock and country umbrella. I love songwriting and performing, I usually sing, play guitar and harmonica. Lately I’ve been starting to get serious about songwriting, looking to pursue a professional career doing it, both in Spanish and in English. I’ve also produced an album and a couple of EPs, both for myself and a two country singers. I’m most proud of having found my “voice” when creating music, my singing abilities and the experiences I had thanks to music.
What were you like growing up?
I was raised in a very traditional family in Argentina, with a great family and great friends. I starting loving music from an early age. While always making music, I graduated in Business in Argentina and later came to the US to study an Independent Artist Program at Musician’s Institute and Music Business at UCLA.
