Rising Stars: Meet Juna and Joey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juna and Joey.

Hi Juna and Joey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Juna: Joey and I started when we were very young, around ages four and eight. We then enrolled in School of Rock and formed a rock band when we were about 10 and 12. It was really a rock band – I sang Blondie, Heart, and Led Zeppelin, haha. Then we decided that we preferred country music – which we also grew up with – so we left the rock band and formed our country duo. We started to sing at Starbucks and places around town. We also began posting YouTube covers, and our channel started to gain momentum. Joey and I then started writing country songs and recorded our first single, “Stay Young,” in Nashville. Around this time, we also met our current label and manager from Nashville, and that’s when we recorded our first EP.

Joey: Exactly, we wrote a lot with writers from Nashville, entered local and regional music contests, and played all the local gigs, clubs, and festivals we could. We went to Nashville, wrote more songs, recorded our first EP, and then continued developing a strong following on our socials. Then we went on tour with Cade Foehner, who competed on American Idol and is now married to Gabby Barrett. He’s an amazing guitar player.

We were then in contact with some of the music shows, and we did America’s Most Musical Family. After that, America’s Got Talent asked us to try out, which we did, but then production shut down due to COVID. We frequently get asked to do other shows, but we are holding off for now.

We then started doing radio and lots and lots of interviews and radio visits. We also recently did a tour in Europe and have released music. Our song “’Til Your Heart Breaks” is our second single and our first was “Something Good To Miss.” We did a video for “Something Good To Miss,” which was added at CMT, and we currently have an acoustic video out for “’Til Your Heart Breaks.” So, we’re grateful to have had a lot of press and progress in all facets of the business, considering it was all done during COVID.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Juna: I think the biggest struggle is the booking aspect. When you are new, the logistics of stringing the shows together can be a challenge. But, other than that, we’ve had steady progress with many exciting adventures along the way!

Joey: In many ways, yes, things have come to us in a way that some people might say is “quicker than some,” but we feel we have been pursuing this for a long time, so that makes it a little difficult in the grand scheme of our career.

I don’t like it when people say we are “too young” because I don’t think that is true. So many artists have started young and made it before us. But we also know that it takes a very long time and a lot of hard work to get to the top. Luckily, we love to work hard!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Joey: We are country singer-songwriters and musicians. I am most proud that we have kept our integrity over the years.

Juna: We are singer-songwriters at heart. We have been going to an arts school for most of our lives. Our workday consists of online school, working on social media content, writing music, and doing interviews. Then we eat dinner and have a voice lesson or do weekly live streams, which we love doing. We also spend time focusing on our bullying prevention campaign throughout the year.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Juna: I would say practice, practice, practice, and try to put in your 10,000 hours of work towards your goal. It’s also important to stay organized – pack the day before, have your things by the door, and make a checklist.

Joey: Eat right, get a lot of sleep, and don’t be nervous! It’s important to just go out there and be an individual. You have to find your sound, write with collaborators every chance you can, and network as much as possible!
