Rising Stars: Meet Karis And Ruby of Franklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karis And Ruby.

Hi Karis and Ruby, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We’re Ruby and Karis — two best friends who have been baking side-by-side for as long as we can remember. Our cupcake journey began when we were just 8 years old, full of big dreams and even bigger imaginations. We spent our childhood mixing up fun flavors, testing homemade recipes, sketching out ideas for our dream shop in Hawaii, and imagining a life where baking was more than just a hobby — it was our future. What started as a sweet dream between two little girls has grown into something real and meaningful. Over the years, we began taking orders, refining our craft, and falling even more in love with the magic of baking. Through life’s highs and lows, the kitchen became our creative escape and our shared sanctuary. Baking has always been about more than just cupcakes for us — it’s about connection, healing, and joy. We wouldn’t be here without the love and support of Karis and Ruby’s parents, who were our biggest cheerleaders. Ruby’s helped us open our first bank account, cheered us on through our first orders, and encouraged us to believe that no dream is too big. Though they’re no longer with us, we carry their spirit with us in every cupcake we bake, and continue with the unbelievable support from Karis’ parents, here on Earth. We know they’d be proud to see us doing what we love and deciding to share it with the world. In a world that can feel heavy, we believe everyone deserves a little sweetness — and we hope our cupcakes bring you a “sprinkle” of joy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating and kickstarting a business is a lot of work, especially when you both have degrees in things other than business and marketing, so it has been a challenge to really put our heads together and work on the nitty-gritty details, not only the fun part (baking)! We want to have and learn strong financial skills and market our products well, and have been learning so much about how to do. Diving into the details in restarting this adventure has been really special because over the years we had lots of mentorship and support that still serves us well today. We lost both of Ruby’s parents over the past three years, which has been unimaginable. However, they were some of our biggest supporters growing up and we know they have been there through it all. Her dad taught us how to do the business and finance side from a young age, where he taught us about profit, tracking expenses, and even bought us an entrepreneurship set for kids! And her mom let us bake up anything we could dream up in the kitchen, helped with recipes, and never complained about the mess. We can feel their hands on every new step we take, despite not having them here with us on Earth. And thankfully, Karis’s parents are still here supporting us more now than ever.. They have strong backgrounds in marketing and selling, and are still encouraging us and helping us every day. The challenges of starting a business remain, but the community we have around us remains too.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We pride ourselves in the fact that we create beautiful cupcakes from clean ingredients. Each of our cupcakes is created using good-for-you ingredients like: cane sugar, coconut oil, etc. We are also in the works of creating and launching a gluten free and dairy free line of cupcakes. Ruby herself is gluten and dairy free, and we wanted to create more options so that she, and everyone can indulge in a sweet treat! When we work on recipes, we use family recipes and add our own sweet twist. This is so fun since we have been baking together since we were little, and have gotten to personally perfect these recipes over the years!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of our favorite childhood memories is when we first decided we wanted to open a cupcake bakery! We had always grown up baking together, but one day at church we sat under a table, grabbed an handful of colored pencils, and drew up what our store would look like. We dreamed up flavors we wanted to bake and where we would sell them (8 year old us picked Hawaii, but being back home in Tennessee is pretty amazing too!) This is also when we came up with the name Sweet Stars Cupcakes, and have kept it the same ever since. Though we have grown, alongside our business, we chose to keep our name and that same child-like joy we get from baking!
