Rising Stars: Meet Kelsey Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Adams.

Hi Kelsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the face and hand behind all things. Write Time with Kels! I first picked up a calligraphy pen after dropping out of college in the spring of 2014. What started as a side hobby for myself became well received by friends and co-workers very quickly. I was approached by a co-worker to make her wedding signs and the rest is history!

Since then, I’ve been a part of over 300 events -weddings, birthdays, store openings, you name it! Now, you can find me teaching classes and branching out to digital illustrations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For years, I struggled with imposter syndrome. I wouldn’t even label myself a calligrapher because I didn’t feel “good enough.” Truthfully, it wasn’t until Covid-19 happened that I realized I needed to stop standing in my own way. I was blocking my own blessings because I was spending too much time doubting myself and ability.

On the business side, I struggle daily with where I want the direction of my business to go. The balance of experimenting creatively can be tricky to navigate. WTWK does not currently have a website, which can sometimes make ordering/commissioning a little more challenging. Thankfully, I have a wonderful relationship with past clients who help get the word out about me and my services. Who knows, maybe someday soon I’ll upgrade from email!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of my determination. From day one, I always wanted to do my best and provide the best possible experience for my customers no matter what. Since I primarily work in special events, there’s really no project too big or too small for me. You need calligraphy on it? I can do it! I truly love creating with customers and bringing their visions to life. My hope for WTWK is that customers know they can trust me with their time, money, and expectation. I want people to feel a sense of intimacy when they see their name hand-lettered.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I love this question, though; my imposter syndrome is telling me that I’m far from successful. However, I would say that my determination and drive have definitely gotten me where I am today! I have the determination to work hard and make sure things get done and take pride in seeing things come together. It matters to me that people like my work- though I know that it’s not for everyone.
