Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Kolk.
Hi Kevin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a indie alt-rock artists based out of Nashville. I grew up performing outside of the music industry and after my family moved to Nashville when I was 12 or 13 I was always around it. In high school I learned how to produce my own music and write songs. Met some really cool collaborators then that I am still close with. I remember playing on street corners and little mall gigs with my friend GAYLE the most.
Just being in Nashville and always trying to be involved in something musically, I joined a boyband at 16 and got a real taste of what doing music professionally was like. I got to learn my way around major music studios, learned how touring worked, how the music industry operated. After I turned 18 and the boyband thing wasn’t really going anywhere I went to school at Belmont University and actually ran track and cross country there. As I got older my sound developed a little bit and I really found my identity.
After I graduated college in 2025 I really started writing and producing full time. Got to work with some really cool artists and my own music too.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road but I wouldn’t want it any other way. Learning how to write and produce my own music is something I take a lot of pride in. It give me creative control over my own art. Like a lot of people know, being an independent artist is tough. I wear a lot of hats not only on the creative side but I’m also my own agent, manager, label, everything. I think I’m better for it though. It’s made me a better artist overall and makes you really proud of what you do accomplish. Everything means more.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Doing all the tasks of an artist, songwriter and producer, my day to day can look a lot different depending on what I have going on. Some days I’m writing for someone else’s project, which means I am really trying to understand what the artist is trying to say and help them say what they want to say. Other days I am the producer in the room. My job there is to bring the artists world to life. When I am working on my own art, I get to combine all of those things together which is my favorite part about making my own music. I get to do it all.
Some of the music I am most proud of is the work I’ve done for some of my friends. Watching them get excited about things we make together is so rewarding. I love creating something and then watching them get to play it live or make a music video for it. So cool to play a part in someone else’s story and not just my own.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is huge. If you aren’t willing to take risks or step out of your comfort zone, you can’t succeed. You have to be willing to look a little silly. Nobody is going to believe in you more than yourself. There are definitely times where people don’t understand my vision or ideas and you have to be able to push through that misunderstanding because usually the payoff is so worth it. Taking creative risks is what makes people’s art unique. Learn to separate yourself from the rest of the group in a way that feels authentic to you. Especially with the rise of AI, it’s more important than ever to not “play it safe”. Stand out. Learn to take risks, I think it’s necessary for real art to thrive.
