Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacie Carpenter.
Lacie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born and raised in Texas and making my way in Nashville. Very humble beginnings. Music and writing have always been my go-to for getting out my emotions. Very healing.
Always had a love for God, music, people, and knowledge, I love a good cup of coffee, hot tea, and peace. I truly believe that one person can change someone’s world. I hope that I can be that light for others because others have changed my world.
You can have a family but you can also have friends that are like family and I’m so grateful for each and everyone one of my friends. They continue to make my life and my story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Part of me wishes I could say it has been a smooth road but what good would it have done me? My story, my road… the zig-zags of life are what make me who I am, how I write, and how I perform. Without the hills and valleys, I don’t think I would appreciate where I am and where I’m going on this musical journey.
There are some days I don’t see the value of every struggle I’ve gone through and I know I’ll have to fight later on… I know they have made me stronger and my struggles have taught me to be brave, kind, and to always find a way to see the beauty in life. I’ve taken a few of my struggles and turned them into a published thesis for my MA in Ethnomusicology.
My thesis, Second Fiddle: Female Fiddlers in the Bluegrass and Country Music Industry, is a life experience and data-driven study about gender bias. Granted, my struggles with gender bias aren’t as heightened as the ladies who have come before me. I’m standing on their shoulders. I’m very grateful for them and their fight. They’ve paved the way for more and more women to succeed in the music industry.
Through my studies, I found that it truly isn’t about bias, it is human decency tied in with generational traditions. Nonetheless, data shows that the percentage of women within the industry is growing due to the cycles of bias being broken by new generations.
Life has also taken me for a wild ride and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My goal is to thrive not just survive.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I do many things. My mom always told me to have your Plan A but have Plans B-Z, too. Due to that incredible advice, I have multiple degrees: a BFA in Music Education with a specialization in Violin Performance, MS in Psychology, and a MA in Ethnomusicology. I’m also working on my Ph.D. in Psychology.
I have built orchestra programs in Title 1 schools in Texas and I’m also a Music Specialist here in Nashville, as well as a Psychology Professor. While I’m in the academic world, I’m also a #1 Hit Songwriter, artist, performer, and published author. As an instrumentalist and vocalist, I’ve won a number of awards such as Peoples Choice World Champion, and 6-time ETX Fiddler of the Year.
I try to work as hard as possible. I’m not sure if anything sets me apart from others but when others begin to burn out, I just try to burn up and run with those flames! I do my best to stay focused on my music career even when I’m working 2 to 3 jobs at a time.
One of the songs I co-wrote with Thornton Cline “My Lucky Song,” sung by JoZie went all the way to #1 on the World and European Indie Charts. “There Will Come A Day,” sung by the legendary, Billy Gains, just came out and is climbing the charts quickly. Also, co-written with Thornton Cline.
This song is special to me because I woke up with the lyrics in my head at 5:30 am and I couldn’t believe I wrote them-so I searched for the lyrics on google. Ha! Cline wrote incredible music. I hope this pop, peace anthem shines. A new song coming out by JoZie is, “Perfect Enough”.
I really wanted the listeners to feel that they are enough. They are powerful in their own way. It comes out May 3, 2022. My personal music is on its way under the new branding of LACE. Music out Fall 2022!
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
Oh goodness! What a question! So many things matter to me—Life! Love! Kindness!
Make sure everyone has someone to look up to…a mentor. Everyone deserves music in their lives. My Mom and the people who have stuck by me for so many years as I travel through life.
Without all these things and people in my circle-I couldn’t do what I do. I’m very grateful.
