Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Patton.
Hi Leah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved photography since a child. I began majoring photography journey in 2019 while in college. I am currently a senior at MTSU and was a psychology major for my first 2 years. I realized it wasn’t something I was truly passionate about and started researching about other majors at school. It felt like I was going nowhere until I thought about my hobbies. “What is something I truly love to do?” I thought about pictures and how I enjoyed taking them from time to time.
One day after work, I spontaneously bought my first camera, and I was extremely excited. I also was nervous because I had no idea what I was doing. I began taking photos of my college roommates, close friends, and family, and people began telling me “Hey, you’re actually really good at this.” So, I began to take it more seriously… so seriously that I changed my major to photography close to the end of my college career! I knew in my heart it was something I was passionate about so I was ready for whatever challenges were given to me. Eventually, I made a photography account on Instagram, and built my clientele and from there, it was history. I never imagined myself being a photographer, but now that I look back, I noticed that I have ALWAYS been a creative.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, but very worth it. One of my main struggles of being a photographer is affording all the equipment your need, especially being a college student. I would say that was the most difficult part starting out.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a freelance photographer, but I think I really would say my specialty is Portrait Photography. I love faces and love creating work that makes my clients feel and look their best. I am most proud of all the support I’ve got through this journey, even from people that I don’t even know. It really makes you feel great about what you do. What sets me apart from others is it’s not about the money aspect with me, I love the work I create and I feel like my best self as I am being a creative. I go over and beyond for my clients, and I love they love my work enough to let me take their pictures. Honestly, the best feeling.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson is to always follow my heart. If I would of stuck with what I was doing, I would have never been where I am at today.
