Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi McGuire.
Hi Madi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Madi McGuire, I am from Tulsa Oklahoma and recently moved to Tennessee to pursue my music career and attend college. Music has always been a huge part of my life, I first began singing and performing when I was 7 years old. I was obsessed with Taylor Swift and Hannah Montana and wanted to be like them. My dad taught me how to play guitar and I began writing songs when I was 9 years old. It was just a fun hobby back then and something I loved to do as a way to tell a story. As I got older I relied on music as my form of therapy just writing about situations I was currently going through in life. I began taking music more seriously, started a music instagram account and it took a lot of courage to put myself out there. I received so many nice comments and messages encouraging me to keep posting. I was able to record and release 4 songs on all streaming platforms while I was in high school. I also got some amazing performance opportunities including opening for Josh Turner, winning Battle of the Bands at Cains Ballroom, and playing at Zach Bryans pre-concert party in Tulsa Oklahoma. I dreamed of the days that I could be in Nashville performing, writing and recording and now that is my reality. Last August I moved to Murfreesboro to attend MTSU. I have met incredible people in the music industry and played at some awesome writers rounds. It has been difficult to find the right balance of college and my music career but I am so determined to make it in this industry and make my dreams come true. My goal has always been to become a mainstream artist and go on tour, but as I have gotten older I realized that I want to make an impact in peoples lives. My passion is to help other girls know that it is possible to do hard, scary things in life and take risks for what you want. I want to be a role model and inspiration for people to look up to and for my songs to connect with them. Storytelling through the songs I write is what is most important and I can’t wait to see where I go from here!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Trying to find a balance between being a normal teenager and country artist is something that I’ve had to learn. High School was very difficult due to bullies and constantly getting made fun of. I remember people from school commenting the worst things on my social media accounts, just trying to tear me down and it really affected me during that time in my life. Since graduating, I recently found out that some of my friends who were supportive to face, were actually making fun of me and spreading rumors. It sounds silly looking back, but in the moment it feels like you’re stuck in that forever and will never get out.
Moving 10 hours from home was very difficult for me cause I am so close to my family. My parents mean everything to me and have been nothing but supportive and loving through my music journey. I miss them everyday but I know they are so proud of me!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full time college student majoring in commercial songwriting. I have always loved school, feeling productive and seeing my friends so I was so excited to attend college and have a fresh start. I joined a sorority and that has helped with the adjustment of moving far from home. I have made so many friends through ADPi and they are so supportive. Anytime I perform in Nashville they always come with me to support and it means the world to me.
I mentioned earlier I have a passion for helping other people and especially the younger generation. I teach guitar lessons to little kids and that has been so fulfilling. Watching them not only get better at guitar, but also watching them grow in confidence has been so amazing to watch. I am so proud of my students and feel like I am making a difference each time I get to help one of them.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to release an EP this year! I am so excited to be back in the studio and record songs that mean so much to me. I have a lot of gigs in Nashville that I will be playing soon and am looking forward to co-writing with other artists.
