Today we’d like to introduce you to Makenna Ausbrooks.
Hi Makenna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started dancing when I was around 4 or 5 years old. I have always been interested in dance and how people used it to entertain and tell stories. Around the time I started college, I decided to really take dance seriously. I began taking classes in styles I had never tried before and stepped way out of my comfort zone. Then, I started auditioning and I landed a job as dancer for a musical that was visiting Nashville at the time. After that, I earned my marketing degree, worked as a videographer, and earned my certification in the Business of Entertainment online through New York University. Most recently, I worked with Mattie Taylor on the music video for her song “Amen to That” and I have a couple more projects in the works!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle has been the knee injury I had during my senior year of high school. It hindered my dancing for a while, and it shook my confidence. It was a big mental hurdle, and I ended up going to physical therapy for it, which helped a ton.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in high energy styles, like commercial dance and hip-hop. I absolutely love working with artists to bring their songs to life not only with dance and movement, but also with other visuals. Certain colors and signature styles are all a part of an artist’s world, and with my marketing degree, I help to blend all of these elements into a creative strategy for each artist or song I work with. Understanding the audience is super important when choreographing for projects.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe it will continue to grow. Music isn’t going anywhere, and with Nashville growing and country music becoming more popular, there will be many opportunities to create with other local artists who are passionate about their work!
