Rising Stars: Meet Megan Knight

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Knight. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Megan Knight is an up-and-coming country music superstar. She has received several accolades throughout her music career.

For instance, her single “Fade” off her EP was picked up by CMT for the show Racing Wives. She was also a contestant in Season 18 of American Idol. At the age of 14, Megan released her first original three-song EP, which quickly caught the attention of Grammy-winning songwriters/producers and engineers in Nashville, TN, and Muscle Shoals, AL. She was awarded the 93.7 WSTW’s New Artist of The Year, independent artist music award.

In 2018, Megan released her first co-produced album, “State of Mind”, which earned her top regards with 93.7 WSTW as EP of the year and again was nominated for songwriting and vocal accomplishments. Her new video “My Drama” was recently featured on CMT. Despite the pandemic, Megan has a busy touring schedule and will be releasing her new EP in Early Spring.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, I’m very grateful to say it has been pretty smooth considering that all the opportunities I’ve had thus far presented themselves to me, and I never had to chase anything down. My career started off by playing an open mic and I got hired as soon as I stepped off the stage.

When I played that first solo gig at a coffee shop, someone in the crowd then invited me to play at their venue and it’s been a domino effect, thankfully. I believe music is for sure my life’s calling and destiny for that very reason. Being able to record in Muscle Shoals, AL even randomly presented itself to me when someone hired me to play at their backyard party.

A man I met named Gene sent my music down to a friend, Grammy Award Winning Singer/Songwriter Gary Nichols, and luckily, he had an interest in me. That’s how I wound up working there. I couldn’t be any more grateful than I am for my journey thus far, I can’t wait to see what’s still yet to come.

Of course, having a career in the arts has its challenges too though and that’s what my recent single, Hard Way to Go, is about.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What do I do… hmm… I would say I do a lot! My main source of income is generated from cover artist shows that I do in my tri-state area; PA, DE, NY. The cover gigs allow me to fund both my daily life and my original career. I am currently an independent artist, so I pay for all of my own recordings, photography/videography, marketing, etc.

I specialize in writing/singing and am a self-taught musician. I also have a hand in co-producing my music; music videos; photoshoots, etc. I am very hands-on when it comes to all aspects of my career. I would have to say that I am pretty proud of myself when it comes to just about everything I am doing right now. When I first started out, I would have never imagined that I would have come this far, and be so involved in every step of the music progression.

I think, at least what I hear the most, is that I am kind of unpredictable. Although I am focused on my country music career, I am still interested in all genres of music. I have several different genres of music I write. For instance, one of my songs “Fade” was placed on a show called “RACING WIVES” on CMT. That genre of music is way different than the Pop Country sound I am working on right now. I just have such a passion for creating a bunch of different types of music.

I really never know when I write a song what genre it may fall into. It is more of a feeling than anything else. (Like a box of chocolates… never know what you are going to get haha).

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I honestly picture music kind of going back to its roots 5-10 years from now. For a while, it’s been the trendiest thing for a lot of genres including country to be more digitally based as in using a lot of R&B influenced 808 type beats.

However, I think people are missing that rawness of country and rock a bit and I foresee the old style of playing coming back a bit more.
