Rising Stars: Meet Nathan Vansickle-Norsworthy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Vansickle-Norsworthy.

Nathan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m an independent artist by the name of Merkio from Mayfield, Kentucky. I was always into music getting into drums in about 2nd grade or so. Then I started writing songs in 5th and singing and got to where I am now.

I’ve been making my own music for about 4 years now and I’m really hoping to expand more on this 5th year. My music isn’t for everybody. It’s very alternative very experimental. It’s like Hip-Hop with a darker rock feel to it but I never stick to only one genre.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has never at all been an easy road. I’ve lost a lot of people to the music. I’ve cut people off, I’ve had people tell me I’m not gonna make it, all kinds of stuff.

You don’t make it big and do not have any challenges to face. Finding inspiration to do half of what I do is an obstacle in itself sometimes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m best describes as a male vocalist. I sing and can rap. I can do all kinds of different styles and I’m known locally for drums more than I am for singing actually. I’m most proud of my singing tho. I surprise myself with my voice on a very regular basis and I couldn’t be more proud of how I’ve progressed as far as I have at only 18.

What sets me apart from others is that I don’t make what’s popular right now I make write what I’m feeling. If I’m sad you’ll get a lot of my normal music or if I’m really happy you’ll get a song like that. Or if I’m mad you’ll get an angry darker rap song. The point is I make what’s real to me and am not afraid to lead whereas most blindly follow and try to sound like anyone that’s big.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Not everybody is your friend and sometimes to get where you want to be you have to make sacrifices. Some of which can be very difficult.
