Rising Stars: Meet Neve Cunnane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neve Cunnane.

Hi Neve, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m an Irish singer-songwriter living in Nashville. I grew up in County Mayo in the West of Ireland and spent four years in Dublin studying music. I graduated with a BA Degree in Commercial Modern Music in 2015 at BIMM Dublin, a music college that’s affiliated with Dublin Institute of Technology. I moved to Nashville the summer of 2015 to pursue a career in music. It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since I first came here! I sometimes still can’t believe that I’m a full-time musician living in Music City. I’ve met some amazing people in this town and made friends for life that continue to inspire me every day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting a visa into this country can be a long and stressful process honestly. On top of the usual process, Covid-19 added to the delays with my last visa which took nine months to come through, but when I finally got the approval, it made me realize how much I want to be here! Nothing in life is easy, I think it’s good to have a few obstacles and challenges along the way, it keeps things interesting!!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I gig several times a week in Nashville and I’m proud of how much my voice, guitar playing, and songwriting have improved since I first moved here. I suppose it’s the impact of being immersed in music, it’s no surprise it’s called Music City! While I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac, Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, and KT Tunstall and consider them all huge influences, Irish traditional music is an underlying influence of mine. I would say that there are strong elements of folk, pop, and rock in the songs I write. I recently recorded a five-track EP at the Bomb Shelter studio in East Nashville. Alabama Shakes recorded their famous album ‘Boys & Girls’ there! It’s been such an exciting experience hearing my songs come to life, as I’ve always just played them acoustically. I’m so excited to finally share them with the world!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t be disheartened by No’s! This industry is tough, and it comes with a lot of criticism, especially on social media, but don’t let that discourage you in doing what you love. Also, be nice! It goes a long way!
