Rising Stars: Meet Olivia Porter of Dickson, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Porter.

Hi Olivia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had my son in 2024 and decided to transition from working full time as a nurse to a stay at home mom. Finding friends as adults can be challenging, but I found myself with almost zero mom friends. I was the first of my friends and family to have a baby and it became lonely to be in the house 24/7 with just my baby. That was until I started going to mom walks in the Franklin and Nashville area. I found out about The Mom Walk Collective and was able to experience how judgement free and welcome those communities were. It made me realize I wasn’t alone in motherhood.
The challenges and questions I had about being a mom, other moms had too. I realized I wanted this welcoming, come as you are community to be available for moms in Dickson too. That’s when I started The Mom Walk Collective of Dickson in October 2024, 1 year after I had given birth. I wanted the moms of Dickson to know they weren’t alone and there are so many women in the same season of life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a mom, timing out walks and events and planning around babies’ schedules is always hard. Some time may work for my kid at a year and a half, where it doesn’t work for a 6 month old baby. Trying to find the best time for everyone when schedules vary is always challenging. Trying to schedule walks and events so that working moms can attend too is something I’m passionate about, but weekends don’t always work out. It’s all about getting as many moms involved and welcomed in to this community and that’s challenging with all different types of schedules.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an operating room nurse who works 1-2 days a week and I’m with my kiddo the other days. When I am at work, I’m a real individual without a toddler clinging to me. It gives me a chance to keep my skills up that I worked hard for. I’m able to be there for patients who often times are nervous about having a surgery. I’m most proud of work when I have patients who are moms or their children are patients. I feel like I can relate to them in a different way now being a mom myself. Working allows me to recharge myself as an individual.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me, is acknowledging that motherhood is hard. It matters that other women know it doesn’t have to look like a picture perfect life. Some days will look like that and other days will make you want to sit in complete silence thinking “how did I make it through today”. I want people to know they’re not alone in those thoughts and that so many other moms feel the exact same way sometimes. Motherhood is some of the hardest work I’ve done. Having a village of women around you is so important and empowering.
