Rising Stars: Meet Powers and the People

Today we’d like to introduce you to Powers and the People. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Powers and the People

The band began almost by accident. Adeline and Connor are cousins and began playing and writing together when Adeline moved to Nashville (sleeping on Connor’s couch at first, lol) in 2022. Shortly after, Adeline met Mary and Alaina when they moved in across the hall. Addie brought Mary on to play drums for a set of gigs with her and Connor, and then Alaina joined the group a few weeks later after an impromptu harmonizing session on a car ride to dinner.

Lastly, Nick, who is a college friend of Mary, moved to Nashville at the end of 2022 and fell in with the band instantly. Joyously overwhelmed by Adeline’s metaphorical chest full of lyrics, we began writing as a full band and played a few open mics at the end of 2022. Before we knew it, we had our first song set to release. Fast forward to now, a year and a half later, and we have six songs released, with more slated for 2024!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We’ve all tended to compare the dynamic of a band to that of a large relationship – it takes work, it takes communication, and it takes honesty.

Being in a business relationship with five close friends is a complicated dynamic to learn to balance, and learning to communicate openly about hard topics like life changes, financial standings, time commitments, and burnout was very difficult at times.

All that considered, looking at it now from the other side, it’s made us so much stronger as we’ve come along, not just as bandmates but also as friends. And it never gets too hot in the kitchen whenever we disagree.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re a five-piece band and consider ourselves to be “indie,” but we enjoy exploring and blurring the boundaries of genres, blending between indie, rock, pop, funk, punk, Americana, folk, and more. Whether listening through our discography or seeing us live, the way we flow through sounds and textures keeps the listener on their toes and curious for what comes next.

Not only are we made up of five vocalists, but we are all multi-instrumentalists with varied backgrounds and training that all come together to create our unique sound. We have a blast in the studio adding little garnishes in the overdub stage, whether it’s a surprise mandolin or violin part—or just going nuts with vocal harmonies. We are also all deeply connected to each other as humans, not just musicians.

I think that the part of our journey we are most proud of is the way our ability to share our music has grown – it feels like we were just releasing our first tune with an audience of close friends and family, and now we’re seeing strangers from across the world joining our community and connecting to our sound. It’s truly a surreal feeling every time we meet someone new in our comments who has found joy in our music.

So, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you before we go? How can they support you?
We love working and collaborating with other artists and creatives, whether co-writing, performing, or other projects – we can be reached at [email protected]!

As far as support, the best ways to support us are the little ones – listen to our releases, share our social posts and music with your friends, attend live shows, and possibly even choose to purchase some of our merch (available on our website).
