Today we’d like to introduce you to Prisca Mojica Rodriguez.
Hi Prisca, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Nicaragua but raised in Miami. I attended elementary schools and into college there. Once I graduated Florida International University I left.
Since then I have lived in Nashville, Tennessee.
The bulk of my work revolves around democratizing knowledge. When I graduated with my Masters from Vanderbilt University, I realized how much I did not know until that point and resented that it took me leaving my safety bubble in Miami to learn it. I write about social issues through storytelling to make social justice accessible.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a bumpy road. I am an immigrant, first generation student, and a woman. I’ve experienced xenophobia, classism, and sexism throughout the entirety of my journey.
In high school I was told college was too lofty of a goal. In college, while making deans list, I was made to question my decision to pursue further education. And in grad school my was questioned because I am an immigrant who looks the way I look.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write books! I got my first book deal in 2019, after writing for public consumption for four years. My debut book “For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges & Tender Hearts,” is a best seller and enabled me to land my dream book deal with book two, “Tía’s & Primas.”
I am extraordinarily proud of my accomplishments because I know how hard it was to get here.
What’s next?
I am currently writing a cookbook and a young adult middle grade fiction book. I’m excited for how else I can reach an even wider audience.
