Today we’d like to introduce you to Quynh Bui.
Hi Quynh, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Quynh Bui also known as MariaB. I start as a part-time nail technician when I was 19 in New Zealand just so I can save some money for my tuition fee.
Then I moved to the US in 2017 and start work at my aunt’s shop in PA as I do it every day it become more and more my passion not only a hobby and with all my customer support it made me who I am today. I’m a nail technician that I paint and draw on nails. As a nail tech, I would say the part that makes me proud is making all women be themself, feel good, and look beautiful. My goal is to make all women feel good and look good.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well, it’s easy to say but once you put yourself into it I go to say it’s not easy at all. My struggle at first was the language barrier to be able to communicate with people and speak a second language difficult but my client was patient and helped walk me through it.
The struggle to do nails is real when I first attempt to do acrylic nails you know picking up a bead of acrylic and putting on the nail is so hard they do not stay in a place like I can’t control them and then the shaping of the nail, they come out with the different shape which is called a coffin, stiletto, taller or lipstick shape now, when I learn how to do it they all look crooked and I have to practice more and more to make them look perfect to me then to my client.
Then I would say drawing, holding a tiny brush, and drawing on a tiny nail I never thought I will be able to, I was struggling I structure the nail how should I pant, and how should I pick up enough polish to make it not dripping. When I draw in the client’s nails sometimes it doesn’t come out right to me so I have to take them off and redraw them, my client sometime said “don’t be so hard on myself, they (the art) look good “ but my OCD makes my client like me and trust me more also make me improve my skill in drawing and creating.
What makes you happy?
Being a nail technician makes me happy. Every day going to work is like a holiday Because I gotta do what I love and live for. And with the challenge, my client brought up for me to do on the nail like draw cartoons, characters, etc. That helps me with my skill.
Also, I gotta chance to talk, shares, and listen to my client story got to know them be friend with them, and help me to improve my English also.
