Rising Stars: Meet Recey Oglesby of Antioch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Recey Oglesby.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been an active person, but 18 years ago, life threw me a curveball. After having my first child, I didn’t fully understand postpartum and, without realizing it, I let myself go. For years, I faced setbacks and challenges, but eventually, I reached a turning point: it was now or never.

That decision changed everything. I recommitted to my fitness journey and discovered Sis.Fit.Training, which became a source of strength and community. Through this process, I found my purpose — helping women prioritize themselves and reclaim their health.

As a mother of two, a full-time professional, Worthy Matron of Serene Chapter #007 (Order of the Eastern Star), and a TSSAA-certified referee for volleyball, basketball, and softball, I know what it means to juggle responsibilities. I understand the guilt, the exhaustion, and the feeling that there’s never enough time. But I also know this: when you make time for yourself, everything else falls into place.

My mission is to show women that no matter how busy life gets, they can still show up for themselves. Because when you do, you’re not just changing your body — you’re changing your mindset, your confidence, and your future.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I mean honestly, who truly likes working out. And I am not speaking on the easy days. I am referring to the days where you only had 4 hours of sleep because you didn’t lay down until after 10pm because of a basketball game, after working a 10 hours shift knowing you having to wake up at 4am to be in the gym by 5am. That is not easy at all. Or how about when you find yourself having a bad emotional day and you just want to eat ice cream in the bed and binge watch TV.

Reaching 437 pounds after the birth of my second child 9 years ago, I was not ready for the reality that I was holding myself back. It never fails, after losing 10-20 pounds I would start slacking off and not to mention the covid year when “everyday” routines had to stop and we had to adopt a “New Norm”

But here’s the thing — I didn’t quit.

Every setback taught me something. Every time I fell off track, I learned how to get back up. And trust me, it wasn’t overnight. It was years of trial and error, tears and triumphs. I had to face the hard truth: no one was coming to save me. I had to save myself.

I started small — one workout at a time, one meal at a time. I stopped chasing perfection and focused on progress. And slowly, the weight came off. But more importantly, I gained strength, confidence, and a new perspective on life.

Today, I’m not just someone who lost weight. I’m someone who fought for her health, her happiness, and her future. I’ve gone from 437 pounds to leading fitness classes and inspiring others to believe in themselves.

Here’s what I want you to know:

You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just have to start — and keep starting, no matter how many times you fall.

If I can do it, so can you. Your journey might look different, but your strength is the same.

Don’t give up on yourself. You are worth every ounce of effort.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By day, I work full-time in healthcare — but my side quests? They’re way more exciting.

As a female referee, I’m proud to represent. Women, especially women of color, being on the court, showcasing our knowledge and passion for the game. My inspiration? My mom, who has been refereeing for over 25 years. She paved the way, and I’m honored to follow in her footsteps.

In the fitness world, my greatest achievement isn’t a title or a certification — it’s getting back up after every fall. With incredible trainers like Alisa Fetrow and Deon Giddens in my corner, I had people who showed up for me when I couldn’t show up for myself. That’s why I’m so passionate as a fitness instructor.

What sets me apart? I’ve lived the journey. Anyone can earn certifications, but do they know what it feels like to weigh over 400 pounds or wear a size 30? I do. That experience allows me to truly connect with my clients. I understand the tears, and I know how to push through them — because I’ve been there.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Whew, this is a loaded question! So many people have played a part in my success and in shaping where I am today.

First, my mom and brother — we laugh, we love, and we keep each other grounded. My children, Serenity and DJ, are my biggest motivation. They’re the reason I pushed so hard. I wanted them to see that their mom can run, jump, and play just as much as they can. More than anything, I wanted to be present because time waits for no one. Whether I’m cheering at a sports game or cross-country meet, or making TikToks with them, I want them to see me and be proud.

I’m thankful for Daven, who always steps in without hesitation when I’m on the go. To my amazing chapter — thank you for your constant support. To my friends who showed up for those crazy workouts, you kept me going!
A special thank you to my therapist, because mental health matters and is absolutely necessary.

And last, but definitely not least, Jillian — you taught me that rest is just as important as the hustle. You reminded me that it’s okay to slow down and make time for myself. That lesson was hard for someone who always puts others first, but it changed everything. I’ve learned that I can’t be good for others if I’m not good to myself, and for that, I’m truly grateful.
