Today we’d like to introduce you to RYN.
Hi RYN, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I feel like this is such a great question because it really makes me reflect on everything I have gone through to get to where I am now. As a child, I always loved to sing, but not formally. I did a play and musical here and there, and of course chorus and choir. I actually was chosen to be a member of the National Honors Choir as an elementary student as well, which was an amazing opportunity. I got to sing with the most incredible, hand-picked kids around the nation, and we created music as one. Eventually, I craved more. I wrote music, performed in Battle of the Bands a few times (including at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC), and decided to try recording. It was hard for me to be vulnerable and share my songs with the world, but it was a challenge I accepted, and I am so glad that I did. While I do not identify in any particular genre, I write and sing my music to make myself feel good and help others that relate understand that they are not alone. I prefer to be raw, unfiltered, casual, and honest instead of trying to fit in with the latest trends or hide behind a mask. I tried that once; it was not for me. While music is not my full-time career, I enjoy creating it and I plan to continue sharing it with the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Far from it. I had some (pardon my French) cr@ppy producers. Ones who would change my lyrics to fit their agenda, ones who would talk me into things I was uncomfortable with, and ones that believed a woman was beneath them. It took a lot of self-reassurance, and amazing friends and mentors, to convince me to keep trying. Eventually, standing up for myself became second nature. I have an incredible team that I work with and an even better support circle of friends and family. Remember, folks. Just because your circle is big does not mean it is full of genuine people.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In addition to music, I have a background in clinical research, laboratory sciences, and emergency medicine. I have always enjoyed helping others and I am working towards a career as a Physician Assistant. Alongside all of that, my husband and I own a farm in Missouri. We currently do hospice and rehabilitation for small animals, but we made it a goal to expand to large animals, so that’s what we are doing. We are working on getting our non-profit set up and while it is exhausting and sometimes incredibly frustrating, I can’t imagine a more beautiful life with the most amazing person.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I have 3, actually. Honesty, staying casual, and being true to myself. You see all of these artists constantly dressing in outfits you would not normally see them in, slathering on pounds of makeup, or singing lyrics just because they will sell and not because they relate to them, and I think that is just ruining the point of music and creativity. I would rather spend my whole career in jeans, a t-shirt, and boots singing songs that cut deep into those wounds than perform in a rhinestone dress with fringe and heels while singing about a party, beer, and cut-off jeans.
