Rising Stars: Meet Sam Davidson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Davidson.

Sam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Batch began in 2013 with a simple mission and a single product: showcase the best Nashville-made products via a monthly subscription box. We’d send out four products (think honey, popcorn, soap, lotion, etc.) made by Nashville artisans to our customers as a way for them to discover the best locally-made products.

Our initial goal was to grow to 200 monthly subscribers, but we easily surpassed that in our first month’s shipment in September 2013. After three months, we had over 1,000 subscribers, and customers were asking for a la carte items and corporate gift boxes. Acting quickly, we soon added those offerings and rented our first fulfillment warehouse, all within our first year of operation.

In late 2014, we opened a brick-and-mortar retail store inside the Nashville Farmers Market (the store has since closed due to COVID). That offering took our business to the next level and established us as an iconic Nashville brand. Now, in 2021, we exclusively focus on eCommerce and corporate gift sales via our line of specially curated gift sets made by small businesses all across America.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d love to meet any small business owner who travels a smooth road. We have definitely had our bumps and twisting turns, but all of that has made us stronger and better as a company.

Most of those struggles have come with managing our rapid growth, making sure we had enough product and people to get the orders packed and shipped. But the biggest challenge happened in 2020 when COVID forced us to change our business model to focus exclusively on eCommerce and corporate sales. Our team hustled to shift our focus, and we ended up having our biggest year ever.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The part of our work I enjoy the most is how many vendors and small businesses we support across the US. To date, we’ve worked with over 400 other small businesses to help them scale, thrive, and find new customers. I love hearing stories about their growth by way of our corporate gift sales.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
We’re bigger than Nashville. While we’re proud to call Music City home and continue to source hundreds of products locally, we actually also work with vendors in nearly every state. What sets us apart as a corporate gift company is an ability we have to curate gift lines based on theme AND geography. Want brunch from Nashville, cocktails from Austin, or snacks from Chicago? We can do it.
