Today we’d like to introduce you to Sami Myrick.
Hi Sami, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been a documenter of sorts. For as long as I can remember, I’ve written poems, songs, and forced my friends and family into taking photos of everything we do! I’d always been interested in diving more into photography but it wasn’t until three years ago that I picked up a professional camera. I don’t think I’ve put it down since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I identify first and foremost as a singer/songwriter, so for me to throw my all into something other than music felt really scary and almost disingenuous at first. But I’m learning that it’s okay to love more than one thing and that I don’t have to stop doing one in order to do the other. I just love art. I love taking life and freezing it into something beautiful like a photo or a song. Thankfully, being in a city as wonderful as Nashville has given me lots of opportunities to do both. Although, learning how to be my own boss has definitely been a challenge!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Up until about three months ago, I was a preschool music teacher for close to a decade. I absolutely loved it and credit so much of it to who I am today, both personally and professionally. A few years ago, a song of mine was on the radio. The teachers let the children stay awake through their nap time so that we could all tune in and listen to it together when it aired. It was one of the most special moments in my life! I love sharing music with little ones and getting to know each of their personalities which ultimately led me to photographing most of the extracurriculars at our school. It was a wonderful way for me to combine my love of all things creative. I think that looking at life through children’s eyes makes everything a little warmer. That’s what I try to do when I take photos.
