Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Somebody

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Somebody.

Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started playing piano when I was 5. I first started writing songs (or at least trying to) at 7. It was just always what I wanted to do. I did classical piano with the lessons and competitions and all that until I was 16. At 17 I started playing around my hometown of Lake Charles some. I went to college for Music Business at University of Louisiana at Lafayette and played around Lafayette and Lake Charles frequently while still living in Louisiana. I played piano and sang in a traditional blues ensemble called The Royal Roots for three semesters and played piano in a jazz combo for one semester at ULL. I moved to Nashville for an internship at Parlor Productions during my last semester. Now I’m living in Murfreesboro just playing in and around Nashville. I also go back to Louisiana when I can and do shows around there. I worked at a music store in Murfreesboro called Concert Musical Supply for over a year but left last month to pursue music full-time.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As a musician, my greatest struggle has been to stay self-motivated while feeling lots of self-doubt. It is so easy to get in your head while working in a field that requires constantly putting yourself out there. It can be hard for me to want to keep mushing forward with my career while I’m feeling that self-doubt. You really have to stay proactive to find success as an artist. Whether it’s practicing in your free time before gigs or putting yourself in front of a camera to create content or reaching out to venues to try to book or trying to find the right team to help you do all this.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I play piano and guitar, and I write songs. I go around playing those 2–4-hour cover gigs you see people doing in restaurants, bars, and wherever else they’re booking. I play a variety of covers. I’ve got anything from “At Last” to “Sympathy for the Devil” to “Toxic”. What sets me apart at these cover shows is that I tend to reharmonize a number of these songs (including “Toxic” which is probably my favorite that I’ve reimagined). Going back to the last question, I’m most proud of pushing through times of great self-doubt to continue doing what I love. I think what sets me apart (specifically in Nashville) is my combined use of jazz chords and fingerpicking on guitar.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The internet can be a fantastic place to do shows and make a little grocery money on them without having to leave home! I’m grateful for how much today’s technology allowed me to continue to collaborate with and perform for people.
