Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherri Green.
Hi Sherri, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I live outside of Nashville, TN, and travel in to embark on a modeling/acting career. This is a pivotal moment in my life. I find myself at a multitude of forks in the rode and numerous decisions to be made. I have made the decision to embark on a career in modeling acting because it was a teenage dream that was left behind when I went off to college in Minnesota in 1983. Now I am 56 soon to be 57 years old. I am African American and plus-sized not the ideal model or actress in today’s focus on youth and celebrity. I struggle with social media, but I have what my mother used to call ‘get up and go”. My mother died almost two years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic of End-stage renal disease. I was her primary caretaker. During the several years I took care of her I discussed old dreams that I let go of during the turns and twists of life. She always said when you get on your own you can pursue anything you would like. Now having lost both my parents, I have a long bucket list of dreams and goals. Some like modeling makes me feel a little embarrassed to be pursuing at my age. But I also feel excited, and the old dreams of being on stage in a beautiful garment is back. My mother was an avid seamstress and taught me ideas about garment construction and design. I love embellishments in clothing. As a part of kicking off a modeling career, I have completed a few photoshoots. This photo I directed to give me a range of portrait and candid images. The theme of the photoshoot was a mature bride’s elopement day. I have never married and look at the wedding dresses as an unforgotten rite of passage. These photos are from not one photo event but two. I also participated in a Bridal Expo in Hopkinsville, KY.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well to this mountain of a dream I have my race, age, and dress size as big obstacles. As far as race numerous African decent women have become household names as international models: Beverly Johnson, Iman, and Naomi Campbell. To my age, mature models are being introduced in commercials, the runway, and in print. Most of these models have had long careers as models. So, I have an obstacle indeed as being the “newbie”. I have been fighting the bulge for the last twenty years. In recent years I have made health a priority over a small dress size. But now that I am modeling. I know maintaining one dress size and not fluctuating is important. So, I am watching what I am eating and trying to focus on good nutrition. Over past years I have dealt with my eating as a part of sobriety and going to Overeaters Anonymous meetings. The focus in doing this is to monitor what you eat and to curb hedonistic tendencies during eating. I don’t have these practices down; but I have the active practices of prayer, meditation, journaling, and taking life one day at a time, one hour at a time to one moment at a time, It the knowledge that God is good; but life is good also. All of this makes these obstacles smaller.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
