Today we’d like to introduce you to Simba (Simba Alik) Woodard.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always had a deep connection with the art of storytelling. I come from a family of storytellers. We share our voices and heal through trauma with music, poetry, theater, etc. I started writing when I was seven. Before poetry, it was song lyrics. Now, I’ll write a whole movie if I feel it’s the best way to tell a truth.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anyone who knows me personally can tell you I have been through some of the worst. They can also tell you, I don’t lose. The road has never been smooth for me, but it has always been strengthening. I was raised by a single mother. We have been harmed and houseless. We have been broke and broken. However, my mother made sure we were also loved and encouraged to go big.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to call myself a multidisciplinary storyteller. I am most known as a Spoken Word artist. More recently, I have joined the film community in Nashville. All I have ever wanted to do is connect. The best way I do that is through word, though sound. I can’t limit myself, so a few years ago, I started intentionally collaborating with visual creatives. I lean on all of my collaborations to create transformative experiences, all focusing on story.
I am most proud of the relationships I have cultivated. This has led me to my proudest moments, becoming CEO of two creative based companies.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
WATER YOUR RELATIONSHIPS! Build community without expecting something in return.
I wish I knew before that the only person I need to compete with is my former self, even if someone else is challenging me to a competition.
