Rising Stars: Meet Tarika The Loc Finesseah of Memphis Tennessee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarika The Loc Finesseah

Hi Tarika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have dedicated my heart and soul to becoming a Master loctician, driven by a lifelong passion for hairstyling. From a young age, I dreamed of launching my career as a professional hairstylist and coach. My journey began at nine years old when I discovered my love for styling hair, starting with my dolls, and soon realized I had a genuine passion for natural hair. By the age of 11, I became serious about hairstyling, taking on the role of my little sister’s personal hairstylist. I created a variety of beautiful natural styles for her, including flat twists, braided Mohawks, customized braids with names, healthy plaits, crazy twists, ring curls, and more.

At 13, I was certain that I wanted to become a professional stylist and open my own salon. My commitment to hair styling grew as I began doing the hair of family, friends, and neighbors, who quickly returned for more of my work, revealing my natural talent for promoting hair growth. At just 15, I found that styling hair became a therapeutic outlet for me, and I made it a priority to keep my hair styled in the latest natural looks.

Although I initially pursued a career as a certified medical assistant, my passion for hairstyling remained unchanged. While caring for patients, I recognized the joy I could bring them through healthy hairstyles that would last for weeks without damaging their natural hair. I practiced this craft for seven years before transitioning to work as a behavior technician in 2017. In this role, I focused on helping adolescents develop healthy hygiene habits, including proper care for their natural hair.

Despite maintaining integrity and character in my work, I felt something was missing. The COVID-19 pandemic changed my life in 2020 when I opened a fully equipped home salon in Memphis, Tennessee, specializing in locs. My fascination with locs grew as I embarked on my personal loc journey, which I later extended to my son. I realized that my true passion was maintaining, starting, reconstructing, and styling loc’s, as well as offering services like detoxing, deep conditioning, and loc extensions. I also found joy in educating my clients by creating treatment plans during our sessions to promote healthy growth and effectively treating scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis with my homemade remedies, ensuring a clean canvas before our services.

In 2021, I moved from my home setup to my first salon in Memphis, continuing my path as a Master loctician. In 2022, I traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to pursue my dream of becoming a celebrity master loctician. However, I soon recognized that my reasons for being there were not aligned with my true purpose. By late 2022, I returned to Memphis, recommitting to my journey as a Master loctician.

Now, in 2025, my passion drives me to treat each loc I touch with care and dedication. I have established my own business, Queen of Crownz, where I provide services for all types of locs globally from my personal suite. I am striving to become a full-time educational salon owner, committed to maintaining my character, morals, and integrity throughout this lengthy journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has certainly not been smooth. It has been filled with various challenges and obstacles, but each hurdle has led to a rewarding outcome. Overall, my experience has been relatively peaceful, characterized by hard work and dedication. In hindsight, I can recognize that while there were tough moments, the path also had its smoother stretches.

One major struggle I faced was building my clientele in a saturated market. With so many stylists in the area, I had to find ways to differentiate myself and help potential clients understand that I was not just any stylist; I was a professional master loctician committed to sharing my passion for hair care through their unique crowns. Additionally, I encountered difficulties in finding balance, often struggling to recognize when it was time to go to school, go to work, go home and stop taking clients to rejuvenate, and attend to other responsibilities.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
