Story & Lesson Highlights with Barb Hill of Brentwood, TN

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Barb Hill. Check out our conversation below.

Barb, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I have to go with integrity on this one. Perhaps in a different season of life, I might have chosen intelligence or energy, but the longer I live, the more I realize how rare and valuable integrity is. When I think of integrity, I think of wholeness and congruence–meaning, my insides match my outsides. I’m certainly not talking about perfection but rather a committment to an honest and authentic relationship with myself so I can show up that way with others. I strive to be the kind of person that others can trust to be who she says she is, be true to her word, and show up in a way that encourages them to show up fully and authentically, too!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Barb Hill and I am a licensed professional counselor located in Nashville, TN. I am also a published author and buisness owner. I started my counseling practice, Holding Space Counseling in 2019 and it is now a thriving group practice with six amazing team members. I am also the director of a psychology practicum at a local college in Nashville where I lead and teach psychology students in their undergraduate program. My debut book, Seasons of Waiting, is a reflection of my heart as a therapist and person of faith. It chronicles my journey with waiting as one of the most challenging and transformative experiences in my life. My passion, whether as a friend, partner, business owner or writer, is to invite others to be curious, dig deeper, be inspired, and discover their innate value and unique purpose.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
This is a two-sided coin to me–dishonesty breaks bonds and vulnerable honesty restores them. As a couples therapist, and as someone who has and is navigating their own relationships, I have seen time and again that one of the most destructive forces in relationships is dishonesty. It chips away at the very foundation and integrity of a relationship. However, vulnerable honesty initiates repair and restoration. It is essential to rebuild trust with ourselves and others.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Patience, humility, dependence, and resilience. The common thread woven throughout each of these lessons has been surrender. Suffering has challenged me to relinquish control over what I cannot control and focus my attention on what is within my reach and influence. As I’ve learned to make these adjustments, I’ve grown in patience, humility, dependence and resilience.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My relationships and caring for them with intention. I am a deeply relational person and my relationships are at the core of my heart, life, and joy. Second to that would probably be to make a real impact on others and be a safe space for others to find healing.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Overthinking everything! Being an analytical person is a double-edged sword–it motivates me to dig deeper than most–but in my personal life, it can lead to anxiety and ruminating on situations outside of my control.
