Story & Lesson Highlights with Brody Schenk

We recently had the chance to connect with Brody Schenk and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Brody, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Painting! I Often find myself playing with a variety of colors and shapes, usually late at night I have the most time for this but I find it so rewarding to hang a new finished painting on the wall.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brody Schenk, I’m a singer-songwriter and guitarist. I play in Nashville with a full band and I tour solo. My music blends storytelling influences from my folk heroes with a variety of rhythmic jams influenced by jam bands, reggae, Indian, and afro-beat music. I try to make every show be a different experience for the audience. My songs are heavily influenced by nature, humanity, and peace.

I first came to Nashville in 2022 as a student at Belmont University in the Songwriting program. After a few years at Belmont however, I decided it was time to start playing full time and I am no longer in school.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve always been very lucky to be raised into a family which is supportive and encourages finding and following your true self. My parents are more or less 90’s hippies. We grew up wearing tie dye t-shirts in the back of a red VW bus with flames painted down the sides. I think I was always encouraged to be who I am and therefore I never really had to be somebody else. I still try to take time every day to connect with myself on a deeper level and push all of the worldly influences away for a bit!

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Practice with a metronome!

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
Especially this past year I’ve discovered that reading daily is a wonderful way to expand my ideas and take influences from a variety of minds. As far as songwriting goes, I, like many people before me, am greatly inspired by Jack Kerouac. Jack’s books and poems have taught me a lot about writing with my flow of consciousness. His ability to spit out words and stories at such a speed has changed what it can mean to be a writer.

Besides that, in the past year or so, i’ve found myself extremely attracted to various ways of thinking such as Buddhism. While I am not a serious buddhist at the moment, I think reading about the ideas of spirituality in tandem with meditation and looking inward, has helped me find a lot of peace of mind, something that many folks need these days.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace surrounded by nature, friends, family, and music. I’m very grateful that i’ve been able to build my life around these things and i’d say I feel very peaceful in my daily life.
