Story & Lesson Highlights with Caleb Mckenney

Caleb Mckenney shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Caleb, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
It is incredibly easy to get lost in the 1000s of photos I have on my hard drive. I spend hours culling photos for sharpness, best light, composition, and those intangibles that make a landscape photo unique. My favorite part of photography is actually getting out to some of my favorite locations, but I truly am able to find myself when I find those images that call to me to edit. The pure joy of a finished image that you envisioned in the field is hard to beat.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Caleb McKenney, and I am a landscape photographer based in Nashville, TN. I focus on exploring the living world through photography. I’ve been privileged to travel to amazing locations both in the state, the country, and abroad. As a photographer, I always try to seek out unique conditions and locations and strive to edit my images to complement and show the natural scene.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My grandfather was always a hardworking man. He taught me about work through his actions. He served his family and always put them first. He was a traveling book salesman, but always worked hard to create incredible woodworking pieces, many of which are in my house. He was a relentless craftsman. He was also a dedicated photographer and loved the art of creating a photograph.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I’ve found in art that the failings I have teach me so much more about creating than my successes. Each failure has an idea behind it, and I am able to learn why it didn’t work and how I can approach a similar photographic scene in the future.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe that creating authentic images is incredibly important. In a world where AI has made the everyday person question legitimate photography, I want my images to be true to what I see with my eyes. I want to always be committed to being honest with my art. I edit my images in a way that highlights what I witnessed in person.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I’d absolutely continue doing what I do even if no one followed or loved my work. I truly enjoy the process of exploring nature and creating a photograph. In an age where social media likes have become harder to attain, I try to look at the quality over the quantity of those who surround me and like my work.
