We’re looking forward to introducing you to Denetra Smith. Check out our conversation below.
Denetra, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
In November of 2024 I became a grandmother to the most beautiful baby boy. Seeing him smile and hearing his little giggles makes my whole world a better place to be! I find so much joy in just getting to spend time with him.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Denetra Smith, founder of RCK Photography—a boutique portrait brand based in Mt Juliet, TN right outside of Nashville, that celebrates identity, legacy, and luxurious self-expression. I specialize in crafting elevated, soulful portrait experiences for women over 40,High School and college Seniors, and Families. I find joy helping people reclaim their beauty and voice through portraits.
My work is a combination of fine art, photojournalism, fashion and radical affirmation. Whether photographing milestone birthdays, stylish sorority reunions, or my “Still Becoming” campaign—a portrait series honoring transformation and liberation—I aim to make my clients feel seen, powerful, and unforgettable. This is portraiture with purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I needed permission for everything—that I couldn’t make a move unless someone else approved it first. I was always planning, always asking, always trying to be perfect. That mindset kept me small. Now, approaching fifty, I’ve learned to trust myself deeply. I’ve discovered that spontaneity can be just as sacred as strategy. My voice, my ‘yes,’ and my intuition are enough. I no longer chase perfection or people-pleasing. Instead, I lead with authenticity—and in doing so, I hope I give others permission to do the same.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell her more than one kind thing starting with this: Don’t be so hard on yourself. Keep going—especially when it’s hard. Trust that quiet voice inside you; it’s your intuition, not your imagination. Give yourself grace, and extend that grace to others. You don’t have to have it all figured out to be worthy. And above all, love yourself first—that’s where everything beautiful begins.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe—though I can’t prove it—that we have far more in common than we think. Our differences aren’t something to fear; they’re what make us beautiful, complex, and deeply valuable. If more people slowed down long enough to truly embrace what sets others apart, we’d find connection instead of division. The human condition is wild, unpredictable, messy—but it’s also breathtakingly beautiful when we choose empathy over fear. I have been working to prove this through my portrait work.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m surrounded by my family and we’re simply being—laughing, relaxing, showing up as our true, authentic selves. There’s nothing like the feeling of everyone being mentally well, emotionally safe, and genuinely enjoying each other’s presence. We recently took a family vacation where that kind of peace was so tangible—you could feel it. Everyone was at ease, and even the flight home felt like a blessing—just 21 other people onboard. It was quiet, calm, and exactly what we needed. That’s peace to me: presence, connection, and knowing the people I love are okay.
