Gerald Barksdale shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Gerald, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Permit processing. City is terrible and clients have no idea what we have to deal with.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Gerald, owner of The Barksdale Design Group. We specialize in custom-tailored residential and small commercial design. Houses, building, landscape & pool design. I was a design-build GC for ten years, as well, so I have a very unique and valuable experience.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Denny Fry. He doesn’t know this and I didn’t realize it til recently, but I owe him a debt of gratitude. And one other person in the situation, but I can’t for the life of me remember her name. I didn’t blossom until college. Nearly nineteen years of not knowing how to talk to people or stand up for myself. Tennessee Tech let me be an RA as a incoming freshman, which is hilarious. I went two weeks earlier than everyone for training. Denny – a couple years older – was already an RA. I believe it was after session one, day one, that he and the other girl included me in the group during free time and that was it. Simple as it may sound, I came to life that day.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You were right all along.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
More than words can contain.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
Everything. I’m an architect. There would be no end.
