We recently had the chance to connect with Jasmine Lopez and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, something that has brought me joy is a small game I created for myself in preparation for moving to England. Every Sunday after church, depending on my budget, I draw a slip from one of three jars and schedule time to do whatever activity is written on it. The least expensive, called the Free Jar, features activities such as learning a new hobby or skill on YouTube. Another as I call the Bank Withdraw Jar features activities like attending a trapeze performance. Lastly, the Bougie jar has a wide range of adventurous activities. One I’m excited for is dining at a Michelin-star restaurant, either locally or abroad. When I first started, I didn’t enjoy it. I’m a quality-time person. I love sharing experiences with people I cherish. Over time, I have learned to embrace and enjoy the meaningful memories I’ve created on my own. Since I don’t know anyone from England yet, I designed the game to help me find contentment in independence and teach me the value of being present with myself.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jasmine Lopez, an actress, business woman, singer, dancer and most recently voice actor. This season of my acting career has carried me from red carpets to new roles, filled with unforgettable highs, meaningful challenges, and invaluable lessons. Each project has stretched me, shaped me, and reminded me of my deep love for this profession and the joy of learning something new on every set. Along the way, I have met many role models, made significant adjustments, and engaged in difficult yet necessary conversations that have propelled my growth.
Recently, I’ve taken bold steps to expand my career. A few highlights include launching a business called An Actor’s Journey, designed to help actors at every stage to better understand the industry and move forward in their careers. I am also in the process of developing my own feature film, and most recently, I have stepped into the exciting world of voice acting.
As anyone in this profession knows, it is often a “hurry up and wait” business. I am learning to wait with grace and to prepare for each opportunity, all while thriving on the adrenaline of “hurry up and let’s go.”
If you’d like to follow my journey, you can find me on Instagram.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I have to say God. While I am grateful for the love and support of my family and friends, it is through my relationship with Him that I have truly discovered my identity and purpose. Through His word and daily conversations, He continues to reveal not only who I am in Him, but also what I am capable of accomplishing through Him. Though I sometimes stumble and wrestle with doubts, I choose to silence those lies and anchor myself in His truth, pursuing His voice above others.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Rejection is something I still struggle with, as I constantly seek the approval of others. I fear losing people I care about, and feel anxious at the thought that they may never have truly valued me. I know I shouldn’t give others that kind of power, knowing most are completely unaware of the expectations I place on them. This struggle is rooted in a childhood wound, a desire to be seen and acknowledged. Yet I have found that even when I receive praise, it often feels empty. That longing for validation has caused me, at times, to hesitate or withdraw when faced with obstacles, out of fear of failing in front of those whose opinions I hold too highly.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
In my opinion, three stand out. The first is the belief that compromising your values, chasing fame and power at the expense of integrity and relationships, will somehow lead you to greater success. The second is the hustle mentality: the belief if you work hard enough you’ll eventually “make it big” at some point. In reality, it takes intention, strategy, and focus, rather than aimless effort. You might as well be blindly throwing darts as you waste your energy. And finally, there is the belief that there is only one “right”path to succeed in the industry. The truth is there are many ways to build a meaningful career, and each journey is just as unique as the individual pursuing it.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Some accomplishments have brought me genuine satisfaction while others haven’t. The majority that haven’t, are often tied with my disappointment from unmet expectations for approval or rooted in the realization that I’m created for more. That sense of “more” extends beyond my career and into my business, personal life, and my walk as a Christian.
