Story & Lesson Highlights with Takela Room of North Chattanooga, Tennessee

We recently had the chance to connect with Takela Room and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Takela , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Building my brand ObeyYourLaughter

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am most proud of becoming the creator of ObeyYourLaughter, a personal brand and movement that encourages people to laugh through their pain to heal. I believe that if you can laugh at what hurt you, you can take your power back. My goal? To build wealth through comedy so I can give back in a big way—supporting the homeless community that sparked My career 2021. Thank You so Much for Those Supporting my Dreams since I began touched the Stage 🎤.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was someone grinding through life—working three jobs for over 15 years, trying to survive more than live. I gave all of myself to support everyone around me, showing up, cheering others on, while never asking what I truly needed. I was present for everyone but missing from myself. I didn’t know my purpose, only my routine. I wasn’t lost—I was just never asked who I wanted to be.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. There were several moments when I felt like walking away from comedy. After losing my father—the very loss that first pushed me to the stage—I found purpose in laughter. But in 2024, when I lost both my brother and sister, that light dimmed. I took a break, unsure if I had the strength to keep going. But my gift wouldn’t let me quit. Life kept handing me moments—painful, awkward, wild—and somehow, I still found the punchlines. Even in my grief, comedy kept speaking to me… and I kept answering.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes the version you see in public is authentically me. What you see is real: my energy, my passion, my personality. But I also have a private side that I keep sacred. That part of me isn’t for the spotlight—it’s where I recharge mentally, physically, and spiritually. It’s not about hiding—it’s about protecting the space that helps me stay whole.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop working the four jobs I’m juggling now. I’d let go of survival mode and fully dive into my purpose—comedy. The funny thing is, that’s already part of my plan. I’m working toward retiring in six years so I can hit the road permanently—state to state, country to country—sharing my gift of laughter. If I only had 10 years left, I’d make sure every moment was spent doing what sets my soul on fire.
