Story & Lesson Highlights with Tina Parol

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tina Parol. Check out our conversation below.

Tina , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think what is misunderstood about the music business and songwriting in particular is that it doesn’t take constant work. Songwriters write so many songs a hear, Monday-Friday. It’s a real job!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a first-generation American who has been a songwriter and artist for 20 years. I also am a scoliosis warrior and advocate for the scoliosis community as an Advisory Board member of Back To Healing.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think what breaks bonds between people is dishonesty and lack of empathy. And I believe what restores bonds between people are honesty and radical empathy.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh yes. I almost gave up many times. In my mid-twenties, I had lost my record deal and moved to Nashville to be a songwriter. I was in a pub deal where I had to wait tables to support myself. Many nights were spent contemplating and praying on if this path was right for me.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think one of the biggest lies of my industry is this idea that you can’t be a songwriter and artist professionally if you do anything else. I have written songs for Lady A, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Sabrina Carpenter, Tenille Townes, Dallas Smith and more. I have had my own songs as an artist licensed in over 250 films, tv shows and commercials…but I am also a graduate student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. You can be a professional musician and still develop other career goals and passions simultaneously.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My faith and my family.
