We recently had the chance to connect with Zach Comer and have shared our conversation below.
Zach, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My wife and I recently decided to homeschool our two boys – Levi and Griffin. As apart of the curriculum I volunteered the fun responsibility of conducting music class. I was so excited to have our boys sit in my little bedroom studio and teach them about music and how guitars and other string instruments work. By the end of the session (30 minutes) we all were strumming and singing silly songs together. It made my heart explode with joy and excitement. I can tell they both will want to explore the magic of music and how it can bring them and others so much joy and peace.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a hillbilly from Rushtucky! Born and raised in a small town of New Salem, IN which is in Rush County Indiana. As a child I was blessed with family who loved music. Growing up I was introduced to so many great band and artists that I felt inspired to teach myself how to play like them. On my 7th birthday I was blessed with a pawn shop drum kit from my Aunt Jane and Uncle Joe. From that point forward my passion for creating music was cemented in my soul. 27 years later that part of me has not changed nor will it ever change. Music is my life line to seek peace and love in times of struggle. And now more than ever I am channeling that energy and using it to help others through there life’s journey as it did mine.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Becoming a father really put things in perspective. We are only alive on this earth for a finite period of time. Sometimes we lose sight of that in the daily rat race most of us are running in. Being a father is a gift. I am able to relive the best parts of my childhood with my boys and that is the best feeling a father could ask for.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of rejection. I wanted everyone I met to like me. Being a people pleaser is a blessing and curse. I have learned over the years that fear is our minds telling us we’re aren’t good enough. I take fear as a challenge to overcome my internal voice and make a change for the better. Everyone’s worst fear only happens in our minds. In order to change we must move forward. I even wrote a song about this vary thing.
life’s to short to care anyways
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Kindness is the key to happiness. Even when you don’t feel that kindness is necessary, it is always the right choice.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would turn off the news turn up the music and take it one day at a time.
