Wes Shugart on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Wes Shugart. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Wes, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Probably the inside of the boot. The hand stitched welt, the 40 penny nail used for the shank support. All the guts that make a custom cowboy boot quality.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a custom cowboy boot maker. I create one of a kind, made to fit cowboy boots the way they were made in the late 1800s to early 1900s. I take 8 measurements of the foot and tracings to insure the perfect fit. Design and leather is up to you; however, I have quit a few designs to choose from.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandfather taught me how to work. How to work with pride and integrity. That the value of a man’s labor is based on doing the job right and to best of his ability when nobody’s watching. I was raised on a cattle farm and most jobs were done alone. Doing it poorly meant doing it twice.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Id tell myself to do it the exact same. I wouldn’t be a boot maker, the husband, or the father that I am today,

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I like who I am.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am doing what I am born to do. I feel the brain and soul are set up for creativity. Whether your creating footwear, sculptures, houses, or computer programs its all creating.
